Yeah, Last Boy Scout isn’t a film I like very much either. Black’s a strange case, because his two Lethal Weapon scripts are definitely worthy of praise, but other than Last Boy Scout his filmography pre-Kiss Kiss Bang Bang in 2005 isn’t great. He was involved with rewriting Last Action Hero, and wrote The Long Kiss Goodnight, too — and I remember the latter being received quite mutedly, but it’s since grown in stature. But still, it was hardly true that everything he touched turned to gold in the mid-’80s to mid-’90s. I think his writing style was just very refreshing at the time, and what he did with Lethal Weapon influenced LOTS of knock-offs.
