It's probably because the UK is quite a secular country (certainly far more than the US) and, therefore, people who believe in religion are perceived as being quite old-fashioned and funny.

If a US sitcom had a priest as a main character, I can't see them being as open to having them swear and drink, for example. That would be more likely to cause controversy and alienate a lot of viewers.
