I'm OK with that adapting and updating things to appeal to what audiences expect today, as the TOS films looked radically different to the '60s series etc.

I don't know if it would make sense to have the new shows look like the '90s ones, and I generally don't mind how these new shows look really. There are bigger problems for me, just in how keen the writers are to distance themselves from the franchise's core values.
